The Cumatzim Design

The Cumatzim Design

This design is called cumatzim. The rhombus shapes embody the four cardinal directions of the universe (north, east, south, and west), while the colors illustrate the autumn season. This design is a representation of the nawal, or guardian spirit, Ajpu - Luz. This is a spirit of light and is symbolic of the Grandfather Sun. It means forehand, hunter, shooter, and walker. The artist of this design is Maria Guachiac Carrillo, from the Xeabaj II community, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. She is a single mother of her 16 year old daughter and has been involved with AMA-PIXAN for over 13 years. During this time, Maria has been in the training process, becoming empowered and knowledge about high quality fabrics and weaving in Telar de Cintura, or Loom of the Waist. She also teaches weaving fabrics and design creation there. Currently, she works with a group of 13 women who help with order preparation. Maria has mastered several embroidery techniques, and this, combined with her other skills from workshops and trainings, has allowed her to prepare orders for school-teachers in her community. The fabric used for this pillow takes Maria 15 days to weave.
